Self-service preparation fits some divorces and not others. If your divorce is contested, involves complicated custody questions, significant assets or debts, or a spouse who has hired an attorney, talk to a lawyer before you rely on any self-help material, ours included. If your situation involves domestic violence or you are in immediate danger, call 911; a local legal aid organization or domestic violence advocate can also help you plan safely.
Requirements vary and change
Divorce procedures, forms, fees, residency rules, and waiting periods differ by state and often by county, and courts revise them. Content on this site may not reflect the most recent change where you live. Before you file anything, confirm the current requirement with your county clerk of court or your state court's self-help center.
No guarantee of any outcome
